“This life is what you make it. No matter what, you are going to mess it up sometimes, it’s a universal truth. But the good part is you get to decide how you’re going to mess it up… So keep your head high, keep your chin up, and most importantly, keep smiling, because life’s a beautiful thing and there’s so much to smile about.” – Marilyn Monroe

Gift Guide For The DC Dweller

Sorry to those not connected to the DC area, but for my last big gift guide, I wanted to pay homage to the city I live in and love. There are so many great designers and businesses right here – like Hugh and Crye for men, Tiny Jewel Box for amazing jewelry and neat DC-themed gifts, Treasury and Violet for clothing, and Nectar Skin Bar for amazing spa treatments. Plus, there are a handful of trunk shows this weekend showcasing talent like Aidah (Sat 1-5pm at Carbon), Artaya (Friday/Sat 10-7pm, Sunday 11-8pm at Chevy Chase Bloomingdale’s), Nikki Baker (Thurs-Sunday at Hu’s Wear) and Suzanne Somersall (Friday 10-6pm at Ginger Boutique Bethesda). Here are some ideas to start.

1. Hugh and Crye shirt / 2. Artaya cuff / 3. Leather glove and baseball / 4. Capitol desk pad / 5. DC cutting board / 6. Bamboo bracelets from Tiny Jewel Box / 7 . Capitol molded chocolate at Artfully Chocolate / Kingsbury Confections / 8 . Gioielli by Nikki Baker jewelry available at Hu’s Wear / 9. Nectar Skin Bar treatments / 10. Jose Andres cookbook / 11. Suzanne Somersall jewelry / 12. Great Seal cufflinks from Tiny Jewel Box / 13. DC subway art / 14. DC typographic map / 15. Aidah brooch pin

I also recommend checking out this BYT Neighborhood Gift Guide for more local stores to shop – I personally love Home Rule, Redeem, Good Wood, Dr. K Vintage, Caramel and Pulp in my neighborhood and Ella Rue, and Pretty People for vintage. This We Love DC guide has some more DC ideas – like area musician Mary Timony’s Wild Flag, and a district shaped cookie cutter. But if we’re talking local musicians, I would also have to suggest U.S. Royalty or Justin Trawick albums. Did I mention I love DC?
